Deep sea sparkles mix with a bit of Halloween creepiness in this #DIY Spooky Mermaid Skeleton Mobile! If you love decorating for the season but aren’t about anything too gory or scary, you’ll love how chic this mobile looks hanging in your home!As soon as I saw this skeleton at Michaels, I had to grab it — they have a huge selection of all kinds of Halloween merch, which provides the perfect base for tons of #DIYs!

Mermaids are insanely trendy right now! A mix of glitter, crystal accents, pearls, faux flowers and shells give this piece a super stylish look – and it’s actually super easy to put together. You’ll have to wait a little bit for glue and spray paint to dry, but the decorating part is a piece of cake …. I chose to use metallic rose gold spray paint here to play off that trend as well….and I love how rose gold looks with ocean-themed colors. You can choose to really use whichever color you’d like though! Silver would be pretty as well – or, if you want to go totally dark and scary, choose black!

Step 1

Gather materials. You’ll need a mermaid skeleton (get them at Michaels!), mixed glitter (I used large flake glitter, medium flake and then fine rose gold glitter), shells, faux flowers, rose gold spray paint, mouldable glue or a glue pen (get at Michaels), rhinestone chain and pearls. You will also need a hot glue gun (not pictured here). Feel free to add/swap decorations depending on the look you are going for! I went with a super glam theme, of course.

Step 2

For easy spray-painting, lay the mermaid down in a large cardboard box. I have the same box I use for all my spray painting projects!

Evenly coat the front of the skeleton, and let fully dry. Then, flip over and coat the other side.

Let your mermaid fully dry – I keep this outside so it doesn’t smell-up the inside of my apartment!

Step 3

With a small paintbrush, paint on a thin layer of glue to the top of the skull- then sprinkle mixed glitter and let dry.

Step 4

Continue painting glue onto the skeleton and adding glitter – I did random spots of glitter for a more organic feel…let all the glue fully dry.

Step 5

Shake excess glitter off the mermaid.

Step 6

Heat up that hot glue gun and start decorating!!! Use shells, faux flower blossoms, pearl beads and more to decorate your skeleton. There’s really no right or wrong way – but keeping the look a bit random and asymmetrical is best for keeping that “shipwrecked” look….

Step 7

As an extra sparkly touch, glue on small pieces of rhinestone cup chain to the fin, and let them dangle down…. I also added a bit to the ribs for balance.

When you feel you’ve glammed up your siren enough, set her aside and let the glue fully dry.

Place her hanging from a wall hook, or use fishing line (or monofilament) to dangle her from the ceiling for a “floating” look! If you don’t plan on hanging this mobile, cut off the thread loop at top and stand up in any Halloween tablescape as a tabletop decoration.
