No dark magic here, we’re not about that life, just a bit of simple sorcery in the form of sparkly DIY statement jewelry. Inspired by the cult classic AHS Coven, an iconic red, black and white color trio trickled its way into this shoot. Cracking candlelight flames add that chicly creepy effect – perfect for creating a totally witchy mood.
I’ve been stuck with a bunch of leather (faux, of course) spools that have sorta been stumping me – I don’t usually work with leather that much. Probably because it doesn’t sparkle. Ha! Well…..how about if we mix it with chains, rhinestones and more? Leave long fringe as a super-statement? I like it……
I’ve got the leather piece layered under another chain necklace, but it can be worn alone just as easily. To create it yourself, start by cutting a piece of 16″ large curb chain. These links need to be chunky. Add a clasp and 3″ extender chain on the ends. It’s really helpful to create this necklace on a mannequin – if you don’t have one, I’d definitely suggest getting one. It’s insanely helpful, no lie. You can see exactly how the piece wears as you make it….
Cut varying lengths of leather, using the longest in the center of the necklace then decreasing lengths up the sides. Thread the leather through each chain link, matching up the ends. This means you’ll need to cut double the length you want your final piece of leather to be. Then, use 6mm jump rings to “crimp” the leather in place, right under each chain length. Use jump rings that are the same color as the cable chain. You can also choose to bead weave crystals through the cable chain – use monofilament so it’s invisible. I also wove on another chain piece atop the crystals, so it’s part choker. Chokers are where it’s at.
If your leather isn’t laying flat, use a flat iron on LOW temp to help straighten. The leather fringe is surprisingly lightweight – which makes it a great alternative to heavier beaded pieces. Make in all different colors, or even try color blocking the leather for cool effects.
Like any good witch, always pair your DIYs with the appropriate wardrobe. We live by Fiona’s Golden Rule: “wear something black”….. Supreme status achieved.
